Once the glamorous capital of the Kakatiya dynasty, the history of Warangal can be traced back to the pre-Buddhist period, when Warangal was prominent by the name of "Orugallu". The Kakatiyas were the Hindu kings who were patrons of esoteric art and architecture. Chineses scholar Hieun-Tsang had described the kingdom as "Danakakitya". Mentions of the city are also found in Marco Polo's description about India.
Warangal is prominently popular for its architectural sites, wildlife sanctuary, scenic beauty and ancient Hindu temples. Timber industry is the largest sector of employment and major source of income of the people of Warangal.
