Gangaur Festival, Jaipur


Held In the Month Of March-April it is a festival devoted to Goddess Parvati,the consort of Lord Shiva. It is time for young girls to dress up in their finery and pray for grooms of their choice while the married women pray for the well-being of their husbands. This 18-day festival is laced with various activities and culminates in a grand procession marking the arrival of Shiva to escort his bride homefinery.


Gangaur Festival, Jaipur Fair & FestivalThe women in Jaipur celebrate the Gangaur festival. This festival has a special significance. Young girls offer prayers to the goddess Parvati, who in the Indian mythology is a symbol of virtue and fidelity. According to common belief young girls in Jaipur who observe all the rituals of this festival, get married to the spouse of their choice and married women observe the same for the happiness of their husbands. The girls start praying to the goddess Parvati fourteen days in advance of the actual fair. Women come out in colorful processions carrying idols of goddess Parvati in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Young girls and boys meet each other and choose their spouses at this festival.
